So January 2018 is upon us and lots of people are making and breaking their New Years Resolutions, instead I have been working towards the goals laid out in my previous blog post. Am I making any progress? Well why not have a read and decide for yourself, and who knows, you may find something interesting to try…
K A Dowling – The Changing Tide
I promised myself I was going to read more fiction this year and I especially wanted to try out some independent authors so one Sunday night I sat with my tablet pondering how to find these mystical beings. I posted out on Twitter and got no luck but after opening Instagram in a state of slight boredom I had a brain wave. Why not search on Instagram using the hashtag #independentauthor. I was greeted with some not so great examples but I didn’t have to scroll very far before I was greeted by two book covers that caught my eye. That was it, I was sold and headed straight to Amazon to buy it for my Kindle.
As I downloaded it I was anticipating disappointment as I’m not much of an impulsive buyer and when I do I tend to regret it but luckily I was pleasantly surprised. I flipped through the first few pages to find the usual acknowledgements and stuff and then I came across a map, which I though was a nice little touch before being brought into the story.
If you are looking for a one off then this book would probably not be the one for you as it is the first book in a series and as such spends a lot of time setting the story and introducing you to the fabulous characters while still maintaining a fast paced and action packed story that is full of gypsies, pirates, romance and mystery. Personally, I loved this book and found it so difficult to put down that I have already purchased the second in the series. If you are a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean, you should absolutely adore this series.

Cris Cyborg vs Holly Holm
I have been waiting for this fight for a long time and as a huge fan of Holly I was hoping that she would be victorious in this fight despite her change in weight class but to my disappointment that wasn’t the case on this occasion. That said, Chris Cyborg fought brilliantly as usual and Holly did an amazing job of not letting her dominate all of the rounds that I can’t help but hope that a rematch will be on the cards again in the near future.
Paige VanZant vs Jessica Rose Clark
I was convinced that Paige would win this match and to me she is the champion even though Jesicca walked away with the win. Jessica’s floor skills are amazing and I cannot take that away from her but for Paige to suffer an arm break early in the second round and continue to fight until the end to lose marginally by decision was absolutely phenomenal. I wish Paige a very quick recovery.
I found this by accident and fell in love with it straight away. You see I am an absolute sucker for anything supernatural like witches, vampires, werewolves, psychics, etc and this has it all. I am pretty excited for the next season to be released. Oh, did I mention it’s from the same writer that brought True Blood to our screens too!
You can buy the box set for the first season here.
I had put off watching this Netflix original for the past month as I knew it was in German and I would need to concentrate enough to read the subtitles, which for someone who writes my blog posts as I’m watching stuff is a slight challenge. I can honestly say that I was so impressed with it that I had the whole season watched within a few days.
I can’t really say much about it as it will give too much away but I will say that it is one of the most original, most interesting and best written shows I have seen in a while.
So, I am now in a bit of a band so as we have our first rehearsal coming up soon I have mainly been listening to some of the tracks we have been covering. My two favourite include Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage and Our Time Is Running Out by Muse. So what have you been listening to this month?
This month has been a bit of a quiet one really, we took Keo to the vets for his annual injections and they confirmed that he is in really good health for his age so hopefully he’ll be sticking around a few more years. We also decided that, as the weather has been a bit rubbish and he hasn’t been going that far on his normal walks that we would go have a wander around Knypersley Reservoir so that was a nice day out in itself, plus we got a bit of exercise too.
The main thing we have been doing though is collecting music merchandise for our spare room as we plan to turn it into a music room once it has been decorated. For this task we decided to head to one of my favourite places on earth, Rubber Soul Records to see what hidden treasures we could find. After a couple of hours rummaging through record bins and sifting through concert programs we came away with a pretty decent collection which included an original vinyl Sun Records recording of Jerry Lee Lewis in original packaging and also the very first single released by The White Stripes – both of which have now been framed and are ready to take pride of place on the wall.
What have you been up to this month?
