I was sat thinking of all the ways I could keep fresh and new content coming your way but keeping it structured so that you knew what blog posts were coming next, so I have decided that every Tuesday I will be releasing a post titled ‘The Day I Got To Know…’ The premise is simple, each week I will be doing a small interview with a musical act or band, and this week the artist in question is non other than Jay Johnson.
You may recognise this name because I recently mentioned Jay in my latest music blog, Top 5 Independent Musicians so I am absolutely thrilled that you have the chance to get to know him better.
Who is Jay Johnson?
Jay Johnson describes himself as ‘a singer songwriter with a powerful voice and wide range of original songs.’
Who are your influences when writing and performing?
Frank Turner was my main inspiration to put down my electric in my bedroom and take my acoustic to open mic nights and perform. Other influences are from the likes of Ben Howard, Damien Rice and Passenger. Foy Vance has been a huge influence on my writing and performing for the last couple of years, a relatively little known songwriter from Northern Ireland.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Supporting Ryan McMullan at the Sugarmill, arguably the best local venue. It was his first headline tour after opening for Ed Sheeran so an honour to gig with him.
And what are your plans for the future?
In the future, I’m going to be playing with a band so aim to build on my reputation locally with them, gigging around Birmingham and Manchester too.
If you had to pick just one of your songs to best describe yourself and/or your band, which one would it be and why?
Just one is hard to pick!
On my own, I’d say Emerald Island because lyrically it’s one I put most thought into, and suits a lot of what I write about relationship wise (which isn’t the most positive of things!)
With the band, though we’ve not been playing long, Under The Sun is the one we have most fun with, and will be finishing sets with I think. It’s an all-out happy song about drinking with your friends in the summer and the structure gives plenty of room for us to jam with so we’re sure that crowds will love it too.
And finally, where can people find out more about you?
I’m fairly active at my Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/JayJohnsonStoke
Head over and grab yourself a copy of his EP, Summer Morning here.
…Or if you want to see him live (which I would highly recommend) you can find Jay playing at the Sugarmill and supporting John Dhali on Friday 19th January with his band. Tickets are available here.
What artist, group or band should I check out next?
