Those that know me will be well aware of the fact that me and the gym do not have a great relationship because of my own silly insecurities – everyone else in there was fit and toned, the complete opposite of me. Up until this past year when I found a little self acceptance, I avoided the gym as much as possible other than when I was boxing and with the addition of my buggered hip although our relationship is now a little better it is still somewhat strained.
Now, I do not consider myself lazy, I may be fat but I am not lazy (and there is a difference). I work extremely hard and have many balls up in the air so finding time to actually get to the gym and do a decent length session can be quite difficult so over the years I have developed a few tips and tricks to ensure I stay as healthy and fit as I can without having to spend my life in the gym.
Take the stairs
It’s that moment where you are faced with the ultimate dilemma, lift or stairs. As tempting as that lift is, take the stairs to get that extra bit of exercise, you’ll probably find it’s a bit quicker and you’re toning up your legs and bum in the process… Winner.
Leave the car keys at home
We live in a world where everyone drives absolutely everywhere, in fact in the name of research (and not stalking) I watched my next door neighbour the other day and I have no idea where she went but in the space of half an hour she went out and came back 3 times. That’s ten minutes per trip, well within walking distance I suspect. So leave those pesky car keys at home and get some fresh air, take your pet out if you have one, or just clear your head.

Everyone likes shopping right, well now you can get a bit of exercise from it too. As well as the benefits of walking, you can tone your shoulders and arms by using the weight of your shopping bags to do some bicep curls and shoulder rolls, next time you’re out, why not try 10 on each side.
Dance it out
This is my favourite of all because you’re having so much fun that you don’t even realise that you’re exercising. So next time you’re in the office or at home alone, turn those tunes up and dance like nobody is watching.
Virtual Personal Trainer
With the invention of smart phones it is really easy now to have a virtual personal trainer in your hand because of the vast amount of apps that are now on the market. My app of choice is Fitbit Coach as I find it really easy to use and it has some great short programs that I can do on my 30 minute lunch break and still have time to grab a bite to eat afterwards. It also tracks your progress and gives you awards when you hit certain levels so it actually makes working out fun.
Exercise in the office
The are an absolute ton of exercises you can do while you work and some of them you can do without even getting up for you chair.
